Amazon· Product Research

Product research that starts with the margin.

Demand, competition, cost and risk modelled together, so you know what a product earns after fees and advertising before you commit to a purchase order.

Overview

Product Research, in plain terms.

Most product research produces a list of products with high demand and low competition. That is the easy half, and it is why so many of those products lose money in practice.

The hard half is what the product costs to land, store, ship, return and advertise — and what is left afterwards. We model that first, because a product that cannot clear a contribution margin threshold is not an opportunity regardless of its search volume.

What this service includes

The work itself.

Scope is written down before the engagement starts, and the weekly review reports against it.
  • Product Hunting

Systematic screening across categories against your criteria — capital available, margin floor, size tier, seasonality tolerance and compliance appetite — rather than a generic top-products list.

  • Niche Research

Assessing a category's structure: how concentrated it is, whether incumbents are defensible, how price-led buying behaviour is, and whether a new entrant can realistically take share.

  • Product Validation

Stress-testing a shortlisted product against demand stability, review sentiment, return-rate risk, IP exposure and supply reliability before capital is committed.

  • Demand analysis

Search volume and sales velocity read over time rather than as a snapshot, so seasonal spikes are not mistaken for structural demand.

  • Competitive density assessment

How many credible sellers hold position, how entrenched their review counts are, and what it would realistically cost in advertising to reach page one.

  • Risk screening

Category gating, compliance requirements, patent and trademark exposure, hazmat classification and oversize implications — the things that turn a good margin into an unsellable product.

Who this is for

Where this earns its fee.

  • Brands deciding which product to launch next and wanting the decision defensible to a board.
  • Private-label sellers whose last two launches underperformed and who want to know why before the third.
  • Established sellers assessing category expansion against their existing operational capability.
  • Anyone whose research currently consists of a tool's opportunity score.

Our process

How we run product research

  1. 01

    Define

Your constraints: capital, margin floor, category appetite, operational capability and timeline. Research without constraints produces unusable lists.

  2. 02

    Screen

Broad filtering across categories against those constraints, reducing to a workable shortlist.

  3. 03

    Model

Full landed-cost and contribution-margin modelling on the shortlist, including realistic advertising cost to reach position.

  4. 04

    Validate

Risk screening and supply verification on the final candidates, delivered as a written recommendation.

Why this matters

What it changes commercially.

A sourcing decision is the least reversible decision in the business. Advertising can be restructured in a week and listings rewritten in a day, but inventory that cannot clear margin is capital locked up until it sells or is liquidated.

The failure mode is rarely a product nobody wants. It is a product plenty of people want at a price that leaves nothing after fees, freight, returns and the advertising required to be visible at all.

What we optimize

The metrics this is judged on.

Agreed before work starts, so nobody gets to pick a flattering one afterwards.

Contribution margin per unit
What is actually left after every cost. The number the decision should turn on.
Estimated advertising cost to rank
Reaching page one has a price. Ignoring it is how a modelled margin evaporates.
Competitive entrenchment
Review depth and position stability, indicating how long displacement would realistically take.
Risk exposure
Gating, compliance and IP issues scored before capital is committed rather than discovered after.

Questions

Product Research FAQ

Pricing, contracts and onboarding are answered on the full FAQ page.

Will you tell us not to launch a product?

Frequently. A research engagement that returns no viable candidate within your constraints has done its job — it has saved a purchase order. We would rather deliver that answer than manufacture an opportunity to justify the fee.

Do you source products or manage suppliers?

We assess supply viability and verify what you have been quoted. We do not act as a sourcing agent, hold inventory, or take supplier commissions — which would compromise the independence of the recommendation.

What data do you use?

A combination of marketplace data, third-party estimation tools and your own cost inputs. Third-party sales estimates are directional, not precise, and we present them with that caveat rather than as fact.
