Ranking work often starts with copy and bids. It should start with a simpler question: does Amazon associate this phrase with this product at all?
How to check
Search the exact keyword phrase together with the ASIN in Amazon's search bar. If the listing appears, it is indexed for that term. If it does not, it is not, and no bid or copy change will produce a ranking.
Do this for your top ten to twenty priority terms per ASIN. It is tedious and it routinely finds problems that months of optimisation would not have fixed.
Common causes
A bulk catalogue edit
Flat-file uploads that blank a field rather than omitting it will wipe backend search terms. This is the most frequent cause we see, and it is invisible in the interface.
Variation restructuring
Splitting or merging variation families can change how child ASINs are indexed, particularly where attributes are inherited from the parent.
Byte limits in backend terms
Backend search terms have a byte allowance, not a word count. Exceed it and the field may be truncated or ignored entirely — and duplicated words, your brand name and competitor brands all consume the allowance for nothing.
Suppression and incomplete listings
A listing that is suppressed or missing required attributes may not be indexed at all, whatever its content says.
What to do
- Fix the underlying cause first — restore the field, resolve the suppression, correct the variation structure.
- Place priority terms in the title and bullets where they read naturally, and use backend terms only for spellings, synonyms and variants that do not fit the visible copy.
- Allow several days for re-indexation, then re-check with the same ASIN-plus-phrase search.
- Re-check after every subsequent content change. Indexation is not a one-time state.
